2008 Basil Plant Varieties

Mammoth Basil:12-24”:  Stronger, fuller flavor than sweet basil. Huge leaves grow as big as your hand and plants have a shorter growth habit. Great for pots and growing indoors.  Sweet full flavor, with up to 2" leaves. Italian variety for pesto and all types of cooking.

Italian Large Leaf: 18-24”. Produces very large leaves. One can cover a slice of bread! Good basil flavor and fragrance.

Sweet Salad: Medium leaf variety, excellent for fresh use in salads, pestos, on tomatoes, and added at the last minute to soups or julienned on rice. The flavor is mild and sweet, with a spicy cinnamon-clove note that gives this basil an elegant twist. Also dries very well without turning black

Genovese Basil: Ht: 18-20”. Full flavor, bright green leaf. Traditional Italian variety. Standard basil flavor. Good leaf production. White flower spikes. Perfect for pesto.

Medinette Basil:12-14 Compact variety with leaves larger than bush basil but not as large as Genovese. Excellent for containers. ‘Medinette’ is slow to bolt, especially in hot conditions.

Lemon Basil:  Intensely fragrant of lemon. Ideal for tea and potpourri. Compact bush habit.

Cinnamon Basil: Ht: 18"-24".  Violet color stems, veining and flower bracts, lavender flowers. Culinary variety with a soft cinnamon flavor. Especially good with Middle Eastern and Asian style cooking. Delicious in fruit salad dressings. From Mexico. Growth habit is similar to that of regular sweet basil, with a distinctive cinnamon taste and odour. Mexicans like to place a vase of fresh cut herb on the dinner table to ward off insects. Curiously, they do not seem to use it much in cuisine, despite its superb flavor. Deserves experimentation!

Thai Basil: 18-24”. Culinary, ornamental. Red stems and flowers in clusters, green leaf. Very attractive. Licorice-basil aroma. Essential for Thai cuisine.

Oriental Breeze Basil: Beautiful basil equally at home in the flowerbed as in the herb garden. Showy purple flower heads perched on bright green foliage appear from June to September. As a cut flower it reaches 80cm/28 while it is a more restrained 30-40cm/12-16 in pots. Strong spicy basil scent and flavor. Fleurselect winner.

Purple Sacred Basil: (Tulsi, Holy basil) The true sacred basil grown in houses, gardens and near temples all over India. Mildy intoxicating clove-scented leaves are used in salads and other cold dishes. Attractive purple leaf form of sacred basil. This purple-leaf form is widely grown throughout India.
Purple Ruffles Basil: 18-24”. Culinary, ornamental. Purple leaves on a compact plant are large and ruffled, with a scent of cloves and licorice. Light pink flowers make this especially attractive in the garden. Makes a delicious, beautiful cranberry-colored flavored vinegar....try it!

Red Rubin Basil: 18-24”. Culinary, ornamental. This purple version of the regular Italian Large Leaf has a sweet scent. The leaves are coppery reddish purple. Very lovely.

Magical Michael: AAS Vegetable Award Winner  An ornamental, edible sweet basil with a clearly refined plant size and shape, 'Magical Michael' plants are uniform and reliably 15 inches tall and 16-17 inches wide. This uniformity is rare in sweet basil plants. The lush aromatic, green leaves can be harvested within 30 days of transplanting and are rich in essential oils for cooking. Plants may flower when mature in about 80 to 90 days from seed. The small flowers are a curiosity since the calices are purple and corollas white. They are attractive for use as a garnish, adding color to any salad.

Green Gate: Fast-growing, high yielding sweet-type, high in essential oils. Suitable for home garden use or for commercial fresh, frozen and dried markets. Ht. 70-80cm/28-32”.
